The primeval landscape of Brecca

Description

The Brecca Gorge is one of the most beautiful Alpine valleys. Glaciers carved out a fascinating landscape with its own unique charisma tens of thousands of years ago.
The primeval landscape of the Brecca Gorge above Lake Schwarzsee is a wild yet magical region. It is home to a wide variety of Alpine flowers and Alpine animals, and is rich in stories and legends. Alpine traditions are still observed here, and hikers are welcome guests in the Alpine huts.

A technically easy four-hour circular hike leads from Riggisalp above Lake Schwarzsee to the foot of imposing limestone rock faces, and from hostelry to hostelry back into the valley. After just a few steps on this panoramic hike, you will find yourself right in the heart of the awe-inspiring mountain arena. After a first coffee break at the “Untere Euschels” mountain restaurant and a gentle hilly section, you soon come upon the highlight of the hike: the Brecca Gorge nature reserve, a national heritage site. Old dry stone walls, Alpine flowers and ruminant cows under mighty sycamore trees complete the idyllic image.

If you prefer things a little more leisurely, you can shorten the route at the entrance to the Brecca Gorge near Rippetli and go straight to Untere Rippa on the other side of the valley, where another rustic mountain restaurant awaits. Further information about the short tour.

If you’d like to stay in the region a little longer, it’s best to book an overnight stay with an Alpine hut experience. Guests spend the night in a charming Pension in Schwarzsee and start their hiking adventure after breakfast the next day. This starts with the chair lift up to the Riggisalp and then a hike to a rustic Alpine hut, where a delicious lunch made with regional produce awaits. It is also possible to start the hike on the day of arrival and enjoy lunch in the Alpine hut. With this option, we recommend starting the hike by approx. 10 a.m.
